Facebook could get you fired or divorced
Social media comments can get you into real trouble

January 30th, 2010

Do you think you are using Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social media sites in a sensible way that will not get you into trouble? You better think again as the following examples will show you.

Facebook gets you fired
In the US about 8% of all companies have fired an employee because of their online comments. The classic example is the one of the girl foul mouthing her boss on Facebook, while she had made him a Facebook friend in the past… It is unbelievable, but this is not a unique case:

  • Don’t make the boss your “friend”
The case of the above girl can be read at Read article
  • Do not mention your job or company ever
A girl in the UK got fired for commenting that her job was boring, without naming her employer! Read article
  • Do not use update your account while you are sick
A woman in Switzerland got fired for updating her account while she was supposed to be sick: Read article
This guy got fired for saying he was sick, while just suffering from a hangover, according to his Facebook update: Read article
  • Be mindful of what you post and whom your “friends are”!

These are just some examples. There are many more out there and a lot of people asking to be fired. Just go into Twitter and search for “my boss” and you won’t believe your eyes.

Facebook can get you divorced
Concerning the above examples, it should be clear that you also need to be careful about what you write or which photos you post, when you are in a shaky relation. At this moment Facebook comments are used in 1 out of every 5 divorces in the US:

  • Woman accesses husbands account while he is out

  • Chinese man marries two wives
The wives find out when befriending each other on Facebook: Read article
  • And another unbelievable one: Woman finds out about divorce on Facebook

Tomorrow I will give some examples of legal consequences of social media use.
